What Can Trigger a Ménière’s Disease Attack?

A trigger is something that may push a susceptible inner ear toward an attack, usually vertigo. But attacks can occur without an identifiable trigger, so patients are usually counseled to keep a journal noting conditions preceding an attack.

According to the NIDCD, you can reduce symptoms and/or the risk of triggering a vertigo attack by reducing the body’s retention of fluids through dietary changes (e.g., eliminating or limiting salt, caffeine, and/or alcohol).

It also helps to reduce stress. Vasopressin is a brain chemical and hormone that helps your body respond to physical and emotional stress. It tells the pituitary gland to make ACTH, which signals your adrenal glands to release cortisol. It also acts as an antidiuretic hormone so the body retains water.
