Chronic Childhood Ear Infections and Related Hearing Loss

Ear infections are not uncommon in children, and most resolve on their own or with antibiotics. But chronic middle ear infections (otitis media) may cause hearing loss or cause additional complications. Regie Santos-Cortez, Ph.D., discusses pediatric hearing loss particularly as it relates to chronic middle ear infections. A 2011–2012 Emerging Research Grants scientist, she addresses the varied roles genes, tissues in the ear, and bacteria may play in the disorder and the importance of combined clinical and population studies. Santos-Cortez is an associate professor in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
