Brain Activity for Listening
Age-related listening difficulties that affect speech understanding and memory are common, especially in noisy environments. In this webinar, Kenneth Vaden, Ph.D., will discuss findings that link brain activity to task performance, shedding light on how we adapt, focus attention, and make decisions during challenging perceptual tasks. We will examine brain systems that support the perception of words from incomplete or noisy information, and how these systems may change as we age.
A 2015 Emerging Research Grants scientist generously funded by Royal Arch Research Assistance, Vaden is an assistant professor in the department of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. He wrote the cover story for the Fall 2022 issue of Hearing Health magazine, talking about his research and art.
We experienced some technical issues during the webinar that affected the recording. While the voices can be heard and are fully captioned, Zoom did not always track the speaker so that it sometimes appears as if the speaker is off-camera. Apologies for any inconvenience.
HHF’s research webinars are a live webinar series that shares the latest developments in hearing and balance research through our community of funded researchers. All sessions include an interactive Q&A with the speaker.
The series is moderated by Anil K. Lalwani, M.D., a member of HHF's Board of Directors and the head of HHF's Council of Scientific Trustees, which oversees the ERG program. He is a professor and the vice chair for research in the division of otology, neurology, and skull base surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, and a codirector at the Columbia Cochlear Implant Program.
